Misiones Bourbon - Colombia

We start the year strong with a delicious natural Bourbon coffee from our oldest direct trading partner, Luis Fernando at Hacienda Misiones in Colombia.

Over the years we have tasted different coffees from them, but they have all been washed coffees. It is the first time that we get a natural coffee from their farm – and we are very impressed by the purity and sweetness they have achieved.

Central Colombia, where the farm is located, has a high level of humidity, which makes it quite challenging to make natural processed coffee, as it requires a lot of work to avoid spoilage and mold. That is why we are immediately impressed by their great work.

Bourbon is one of the mainstays of modern specialty coffees. French missionaries brought the variety from Yemen to Bourbon Island (now called Réunion), from which it got its name.

In the middle of the 19th century, the variety was taken to Central and South America. It is the parent of many varieties, e.g. Caturra and Catuai, which are now actually more popular than Bourbon itself. Bourbon is known for having lots of sweetness and delicious fruit flavours that vary in intensity depending on the origin and processing method.

Taste and aroma:

In recent years, we have seen a trend towards producing pure, natural coffees. It is evident when we taste our natural Ethiopian coffee, Sookoo Qabballe, which is almost reminiscent of a washed Ethiopian coffee, but it is also very evident in this natural bourbon. Very little 'funk', but with plenty of fruit flavour.

The aroma of the coffee is sweet and slightly fruity. It has notes of strawberry jam, dried apple slices, red candies and sugar cookies.
