Riakiberu – fruity coffee from the Kenyan highlands

This coffee is the essence of Kenya: lively, juicy and sweet. In the cup you will find notes of blackcurrant, raspberry and brown sugar – soft, complex and full of character.

The coffee comes from Murang'a County in central Kenya, where it grows in nutrient-rich volcanic soil under shade trees. Here, small-scale producers grow coffee alongside bananas, corn and macadamia nuts. When the harvest is ready, the berries are delivered to the Riakiberu Factory – a washing station owned by the Kamacharia Farmers Co-operative Society, which consists of 1,542 small-scale farmers.

The cooperative allows members to take out loans from the surplus of the common fund so they can invest in their farm, pay school fees or handle unforeseen expenses.

Founded in 1994, Riakiberu processes coffee from local varieties such as SL-28, SL-34, Ruiru 11 and Batian. The result is a coffee that shows why Kenya is known for some of the world's most distinctive beans.
