... til sammenligning har Fairtrade-certificeret kaffe typisk en merbetaling på mindre end 10% for bonden. Og certificeringen er heller ikke gratis.

Forskning viser gang på gang, at certificeringer som Fairtrade og Rainforest Alliance ikke har nogen beviselig positiv effekt på kaffebøndernes levevilkår. (Cordes og Sagan, 2021)

Vestlige kaffefirmaer tjener store summer, mens kaffebønder verden over lever i fattigdom. Det er forkert, og det skal vi ændre på.

Derfor betaler vi mere for de kaffebønner, vi importerer.

44% af kaffebønderne verden over lever fortsat i fattigdom. Mindst 5,5 millioner kaffebønder lever under den internationale fattigdomsgrænse på $3,20 om dagen. Undersøgelser viser, at en tredjedel af kaffebønderne tjener mindre end $100 årligt fra kaffeproduktion (Enveritas, 2018; Sachs et al., 2019).

En kort og gennemskuelig forsyningskæde

Vi arbejder altid med så kort og gennemskuelig en forsyningskæde, som muligt. 98% af vores kaffe er handlet direkte hos kaffefarmen, altså uden at bruge en mellemmand. 

Denne kaffe er en undtagelse, da vi har brugt en transparent importør til at få kaffen hjem.

Langt størstedelen af vores ristede kaffe bliver også købt direkte hos os - med nogle enkelte forhandlere som undtagelse, såsom kaffebarer og specialtetsforretninger. Man kan ikke købe vores kaffe i nogen store kæder eller på online markedspladser. 

Dermed er der færre parter der skal “have en bid af kagen” og vi sikrer en bedre betaling for kaffefarmene, som i årtier har været underbetalt og levet i fattigdom.

Direct Trade – No Middleman

We know our coffee farmers personally because we trade directly with them. This gives us a highly transparent value chain without unnecessary intermediaries.

It provides you with added assurance and brings you closer to the farm.

Direct trade means, among other things:

  • More transparency
  • More traceability
  • Better payment to the coffee farmer

The vast majority of our coffee is purchased directly from the farmers. In 2024, 98% of our coffee was sourced through direct trade.

By cutting out the middleman, we know exactly where the money goes, ensuring that as much as possible ends up with the farmer — who has been underpaid for more than 40 years.

Direct trade allows us to better ensure quality and accountability at the source. At the same time, farmers gain access to valuable insights about the European market, new EU regulations, and more, through our partnership.

With direct trade, we achieve a much higher degree of transparency and traceability — something that’s crucial when it comes to documenting farming methods, working conditions, and whether a particular coffee has contributed to deforestation.

This coffee is grown in agroforestry

This roughly means that the coffee plants are shaded by other trees and plants. Agroforestry is the opposite of what is called “monoculture”, where you have a field that only consists of one type of plant, for example coffee plants.

In a forest farm, the coffee plants are part of a system with animals and plants that live naturally in the area.

There are many different types of agroforestry. There can be different amounts of shade cover, different degrees of diversity in plants and animals, and one can, for example, talk about having several different layers of shade cover, with trees that have their crowns at different heights and thus several layers.

Why agroforestry?

Since 1990, an estimated 420 million hectares of forest have been cleared and converted to agriculture, including coffee plantations. Although the rate of deforestation has slowed in recent decades, significant deforestation continues. About 10 million hectares of forest are cleared each year - an area the size of Iceland.

Therefore, we need to do something.

Forestry is a really good solution for both having food production and at the same time taking care of our ecosystems and climate.

Here are just some of the benefits of agroforestry:

  • Increases biodiversity
  • Absorbs much more CO2 from the atmosphere
  • Minimizes the need for fertilizer
  • Make coffee plants more resilient
  • Extends the life of the coffee plant
  • Gives the coffee a higher quality and better taste, as the coffee cherries take longer to ripen in the shade
  • Better soil conditions
  • Creates a microclimate that makes plants more resistant to climate change

The coffee

It is both new and familiar.

You may know the name La Catarata, but we guarantee you haven't tried this one yet.

La Catarata Natural – named so because of its natural process instead of the black honey process known from the classic La Catarata.

La Catarata Natural is a Costa Rican coffee from the Chirripó region, grown and fermented by our long-time partners at Café Rivense. Instead of the caramel flavor of black honey coffee, La Catarata natural has more fruity notes of juicy red apple and dried apricot.

What is natural processing?

Natural coffee is made from coffee berries that are dried exactly as they are - which is why it is called as it is. This means with both pulp and skin still on the berry.

This differs from honey processed coffee, where the skin is removed from the coffee berry and the pulp is left behind when the coffee berries are dried. And ed washed coffee is removed everything except the bean.

Honey processed coffee is known to have more syrupy and caramel-like flavor notes, while the natural processing typically produces more fruity notes and is less complex. You will also find that in this new version of an old favorite.

The farm

Café Rivense del Chirripó, was founded in the 1940s by Ricardo's great-grandparents. Today it is run by Ricardo, his father Régulo and his brother Esteban. The family-owned farm did not have much of a tailwind from the start, where factors such as low market prices, lack of information about coffee production and financing in the area played a big role for the family. The family had recently settled in the region and outsiders predicted the project would fail.

Fortunately, it didn't work out that way; the family's hard work bore fruit, and in 2019 one of the farm's microlots was No. 5 in the Cup of Excellence Costa Rica – which was the first time a coffee from the Chirripó region ended up in the COE Top 10.

In addition to growing really good coffee, great consideration will also be given to the environment on the farm. Here, the family has managed to create a sustainable system, where reducing the farm's CO2 emissions is paramount. On the farm, no water is used for the processing itself, and the water that is used is not discharged into nature. The farm is located between two nature reserves, so it is important that water discharge is taken care of.

The family uses as little fertilizer as possible, and instead of regular fertilizer, they use natural fertilizer in the form of the residual products from the coffee. In this way, it all forms part of a circular and natural process.

Costa Rica

Costa Rica is the only country in the world where it is decidedly illegal to grow anything other than Arabica coffee. This was established by law in 1989 because Costa Rica wanted to ensure that low quality coffee varieties were planted. In this way, the government hoped to motivate the farmers to strive to grow coffee of the highest quality. It has actually succeeded very well. Of course, not all coffee from Costa Rica is equally good, but in general, coffee from Costa Rica is known to be of very high quality.

Coffee made its way into Costa Rica in the 1700s and in 1829 the income from coffee exports exceeded the income the country had from tobacco and sugar cane. The government saw the potential and started giving free land to farmers to grow coffee. This caused production to explode.

In the beginning, Costa Rica exported their coffee to Chile and Panama from where the coffee was sold under the name Café Chileno de Valparaíso. The coffee was primarily sold to Great Britain, which therefore began to buy the coffee directly from Costa Rica instead.

The export of coffee has helped to secure the country a "rich" middle class which means that the standard of living is generally better in Costa Rica than the countries that lie around them.

This can be seen, among other things, in the fact that there has been no civil war in the country since 1948. This also means that the country no longer has a unified military. There are small independent units that ensure compliance with legislation.

The budget that was previously used to run the military was and still is redistributed to promote education and culture. This has had a major impact on the higher standard of living and the general higher level of education that we see in Costa Rica.

Direct Trade

Why deal directly? Because the farmer is the most important part of the entire chain from bean to cup. Without their work, we would not have the opportunities to roast the fantastic coffees that find their way to our roastery!

In part, it is ethically most important for us to ensure that the coffee farmer gets the payment for his work that he and his employees deserve - and that they need to be able to continue developing these fantastic coffees. When we deal and communicate directly, we help to guarantee that part of the profit for the hard work they do goes to the pickers and the owners of the coffee farm.

Our price

We have paid $9.92/kg to the Ureña family and Café Rivense del Chirripó (FOB).

The market price at the time of the contract was $4.21/kg.

In this case, we have therefore paid 136% above the market price for this coffee.
