This coffee emits just 0.45 kg CO2e/kg.

0.45 kg COe/kg is - as far as we know - the lowest published CO2 emissions for a coffee in Denmark.

The Danish think tank Concito calculates an emission of standard coffee for 6.9 kg CO2e/kg - other calculations have even higher emissions for coffee.

The CO2e emissions per kg IMPACT No. 01 are distributed as follows:

  • Farm: 0.08 kg
  • Handling (including storage and transport): 0.04 kg
  • Export (truck and ship to Denmark): 0.10 kg
  • Roasting: 0.16 kg
  • Packaging: 0.06 kg
  • Shipping: 0.01 kg

The total emissions are then compensated via B Corp-certified Ecology.

How is it calculated?

We take our climate impact seriously, and we have made active efforts over several years to first reduce our CO2 footprint throughout the value chain, including cultivation, transport, packaging and roasting.

The emissions of this coffee are calculated according to the GHG Protocol's Product Standard as cradle-to-gate. Our total climate accounts for scope 1, 2 and 3 are available in our annual Transparency Report .

Our climate compensation at Ecologi has been Verified Carbon Standard certified through VERRA. The selection of projects is guided by Ecologi's Climate Committee and follows the Project Drawdown framework.

Coffee farm with large absorptions

The numbers behind this calculation only come from the cultivation of coffee and the emissions on the farm associated with coffee production. The low numbers are an indication of how skilled and careful Paulo Afonso and his team are with their resources. Santa Clara is designed as a more holistic farm - here there is wild nature, other crops, a little animal husbandry and reforestation. If you include all sources on the entire farm, Santa Clara actually absorbs more CO2 than they emit. Among other things, because of their efforts with reforestation and because they dedicate so much of their land to wild nature. In our opinion, this is an idea of how a conventional coffee farm can create a production that is beneficial for both the coffee, efficiency, people and nature.

Verified by B Corp, SBTi, FORCE Technology and Imaflora

Our climate accounting has been reviewed and verified by a number of independent organizations. This means that we - and those who buy and enjoy IMPACT No. 01 - can rest assured that the reported climate impact is factual.

We paid the coffee farmer 15% more for this coffee

...in comparison, Fairtrade-certified coffee typically has a premium of less than 10% for the farmer. And the certification is not free either.

Research shows time and again that certifications such as Fairtrade and Rainforest Alliance have no demonstrable positive effect on the living conditions of coffee farmers. (Cordes and Sagan, 2021)

Western coffee companies are making huge profits while coffee farmers around the world live in poverty. This is wrong, and we need to change that.

That's why we pay more for the coffee beans we import.

44% of coffee farmers worldwide still live in poverty. At least 5.5 million coffee farmers live below the international poverty line of $3.20 a day. Studies show that one-third of coffee farmers earn less than $100 annually from coffee production (Enveritas, 2018; Sachs et al., 2019).

When we pay farmers more, we give them the opportunity to invest in themselves and their businesses. This leads to further growth and the opportunity to invest in more sustainable farming practices such as reducing water use and reforestation projects.

The calculation:

We paid the farmer: $6.50/kg

The market price at the time of the contract was: 5.63 $/kg (ICO Brazilian Naturals)

This means we have paid the farmer 15% more than the market price.

Direct Trade – No Middleman

We know our coffee farmers personally because we trade directly with them. This gives us a highly transparent value chain without unnecessary intermediaries.

It provides you with added assurance and brings you closer to the farm.

Direct trade means, among other things:

  • More transparency
  • More traceability
  • Better payment to the coffee farmer

The vast majority of our coffee is purchased directly from the farmers. In 2024, 98% of our coffee was sourced through direct trade.

By cutting out the middleman, we know exactly where the money goes, ensuring that as much as possible ends up with the farmer — who has been underpaid for more than 40 years.

Direct trade allows us to better ensure quality and accountability at the source. At the same time, farmers gain access to valuable insights about the European market, new EU regulations, and more, through our partnership.

With direct trade, we achieve a much higher degree of transparency and traceability — something that’s crucial when it comes to documenting farming methods, working conditions, and whether a particular coffee has contributed to deforestation.

A short and transparent supply chain

We always work with as short and transparent a supply chain as possible. 98% of our coffee is purchased directly from the coffee farm, without using a middleman.

The vast majority of our roasted coffee is also purchased directly from us - with the exception of a few retailers, such as coffee shops and specialty stores. You cannot buy our coffee in any large chains or on online marketplaces.

This means that there are fewer parties who have to "have a piece of the pie" and we ensure better payment for the coffee farms, which have been underpaid and living in poverty for decades.

The supply chain for this coffee looks like this:

  • The coffee is grown in Brazil in the Campo Das Vertentes area.
  • The coffee cherries have been processed at the coffee cooperative Sancoffee's own washing station.
  • The green coffee beans are imported directly to CleverCoffee by ship to the Port of Aarhus.
  • The coffee is roasted and packaged at CleverCoffee in our own roastery outside Aarhus.

Influential coffee

This is the first coffee in our IMPACT series. IMPACT No. 01 is the name – this coffee was previously known as Simply Sustainable.

Not everything is as it has always been with this coffee.

The taste, quality, and social responsibility are as high as ever. But now this coffee also have documented CO2 footprint from the farm.

The farm, Santa Clara, has just been verified; they absorb more carbon than they emit. That is possible because a large part of their total area is committed to keeping wild nature.

Santa Clara is part of the B Corp certified cooperative Sancoffee, which is a guarantee for a very high level of social, economic, and environmental responsibility.

Coffee farmer Paulo Afonso de Resende

Paulo and his team have produced this sweet and pleasant coffee. Coffee from Brazil is known for its pleasant low acidity, and here is one of the best examples of this.

In the cup you will find a full body and great sweetness with flavours of chocolate and caramel. This is a real crowd favourite that you can proudly serve to everyone.

Paulo grew up on a coffee farm, and after a few years of working as an engineer, he chose to return to his dream of growing coffee when he bought the Santa Clara farm.

He runs the farm together with his family, and his daughter Lilian is very involved in the operation of the farm.

The farm is located near the village of Olivera. 8 families live on the farm and there are 38 employees. The total area of the farm is 1445 hectares, of which 193 hectares are used for growing coffee. 365 hectares are used to cultivate wild nature to ensure biodiversity in the area.
