Coffee of the month: Santos Natural

Honduran Parainema

This month's coffee is a natural from Honduras. It has a wonderful taste of orange, vanilla and milk chocolate. For some, the taste will even remind them of the little orange-flavored Tic-Tacs.

The variety is Parainema, developed by the Honduran Coffee Institute (IHCAFE). It is known for its resistance to coffee leaf rust, which makes it very popular among coffee producers in Honduras.

Parainema is interesting as it is not 100% Arabica. It originates from Timor Hybrid, a natural cross between Arabica and Robusta. This means that this month's coffee is technically not 100% Arabica. However, Parainema is generally considered an Arabica variety because it is genetically closer to Arabica than to Robusta. Furthermore, the berries, tree, and leaves of Parainema almost resemble an Arabica plant.

And more importantly—it doesn't taste like a Robusta coffee at all.

A true coffee veteran

The coffee comes from experienced coffee farmer José Arístides, a true veteran in coffee production. Today he is 74 years old and has spent large parts of his life immersing himself in the world of coffee.

Although José Arístides now has a great passion for coffee, it has not always been this way:

"[...] I felt no love. Not for the plants, not for nature, not for anyone, really."

In 2016, José experienced a profound epiphany that ignited a newfound passion for coffee production. This passion has fueled his commitment to exceptional quality, which is clearly reflected in this coffee.
