Kalita Wave 185

This is the popular Kalita Wave 185, which you've probably seen in many places. It's a filter brewer that many people have as their preferred brewer, while it's also a brewer that can deliver a great filter brew.

The Kalita Wave 185 is a so-called 'flat bottom brewer', unlike, for example, the iconic V60 brewer from Hario, which is a conical brewer.

Although it varies greatly from coffee to coffee, it is generally said that 'flat bottom' brewers can be better at highlighting sweet flavor notes such as peach, mango, strawberry, chocolate or caramel, where the conical brewer can be better at highlighting sour flavor notes such as citrus fruits, berries, green apples, etc.

400g water / 92°

Step-by-step

Boil the water - you will need 400 g. of water, but boil a little extra so you can moisten the filter before use.

CleverCoffee Tip
Use filtered water as this will give you the best conditions for a transparent and flavorful coffee experience.

If you have a temperature-controlled pour-over kettle, keep the temperature at 92°C. This will give you the most optimal coffee. If the water is too hot, more than is good for the beans will be extracted. If the water is too cold, you risk not getting the most optimal flavors from the coffee.

Use the extra water to wet the filter

CleverCoffee Tip
Use the hot water to warm up your coffee cup.

Grind your coffee medium to coarse.

For a Wilfa Uniform grinder, we recommend setting 32-34.

CleverCoffee Tip
Do you find the coffee bitter and dry? Grind the coffee a little coarser.

Do you find the coffee salty and sour? Grind the coffee finer.

Add the ground coffee to the filter.

Place the jug with the Kalita brewer on a scale, reset it.

Start your timer and start pouring 50 g. of water over the coffee - let it steep for 30 seconds.

Then add the rest of the water up to 400 g. - this must be done within 1 minute and 30 seconds.

CleverCoffee Tip
If all the coffee is not wet, gently stir the coffee to achieve optimal extraction.

The total brewing time should be about 2 minutes and 50 seconds.

Let the coffee stand until it is ready to drink - enjoy!
